The annual per head consumption of beef has remained stable over the last years (minimum 14.2 kg in 2015 and maximum 17.2 kg in 2011). Net domestic beef production decreased in 2019 by 43.8% compared to 2010, amounting to 34,320 tbs, covering 7.5% of total meat production. The ES aims to improve the "economics" of the breeders, improving the productive and product quality indicators. Specifically, the improvement of economic indicators will come from:

  • The reduction of feeding costs as a result of the more rational management of pastures
  • The increase in the estimated economic value of the carcass by up to 40% if the traceability system is implemented throughout the value chain. In particular and according to the literature, consumers are willing to pay a minimum of 15% higher price for meat with a field tracking system. When the system ensures the safety of the meat, this increase exceeds 20%, while in cases where the system ensures combined additional characteristics in the meat, this increase approaches 40%.
  • Highlighting the local character of beef and its connection with the culinary heritage of Xanthi.

Consumers are willing to pay at least 10% more for local meat compared to regular meat.
